This afternoon I attended a session exploring the ways in which mothers are linked with human rights. I couldn't agree more with the discussion that described mothers as a child's first and most important link with human rights. Beyond childhood, mothers, whether biological producers of children or those who care for children in some capacity, carry weighty responsibility for teaching, monitoring and sustaining a society's journey toward universal application for all of the tenets and protections outlined in the Universal Declaration.
I hope to see that the input and opinion of women, especially mothers, are valued and considered when attempting to solve societal challenges and problems. I hope that mothers are given the support, education, tools and freedom to exercise their unique role in working toward equal human rights for all. And finally, I hope that Soroptimist International can draw the wide spread recognition they deserve for doing just these things for more than 80 years.
